  • Classroom Connect is a paid service that sends monthly updates with lesson plans ideas and web sites for teachers to use. In addition, they hold conferences and have other merchandise for sale. There is also a free area of their site, called "Connected Teacher."

  • CustomGuide.com operates a website with computer courseware and training guides. You can download preview versions of thousands of courses, or you can go ahead and purchase the full course. Added 1/22/01

  • If you are interested in finding shareware or freeware for your computer (software you download from the Internet and pay for later), check out Download.com. This site lists shareware for various operating systems, such as Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Windows CE and PalmPilot. If you find a useful piece of shareware, don't forget to pay for it!

  • Learn2.com offers over 200 tutorials in different applications (Word, Excel and Powerpoint) as well as Internet information and more advanced technology information, such as graphic design and databases. Tutorial levels range from beginner to advanced. You can purchase subscriptions of various length (1 month, 6 months or 1 year).   • Online education for technology and its usage in the classroom is available from Online Education, Inc. The organization publishes a monthly newsletter with ideas and lesson plans on integrating the Internet into your classroom. Online Educator magazine is a good resource for teachers.

  • If you use a Windows computer, you might want to download this piece of shareware called Time Manager. (Shareware is software you download over the Internet, try out, and then pay for at a later date. The cost is usually between $10-$25.) EZ-Timer is a stopwatch/timer that stays on your screen and can monitor computer use. You can have the machine beep at the end of the set time, or shut down. With EZ-Timer, you can have your students work on the computer and not have to worry about watching the time for them. You can have the computer beep when their time is up!

  • Tutorials.com helps you find tutorials on different kinds of applications for computers, such as the Internet, graphic design or databasing. The find service is free, but you would have to pay for the tutorials. You must also have a Windows-compatible browser to use the tutorials.

  • The Verio Business Center offers on-line courses in a variety areas. Some are application-specific, such as Office 2000, Photoshop, Windows 95, 98 and NT, and Excel. Other courses address Internet browsers as well as more advanced programming languages, such as A+ and CGI/Perl.   • WebWorkshops, created by the Evergreen Project, Inc., is another type of online teacher professional development. There are twelve modules, ranging from beginning Internet skills to technology integration. The first course can be previewed at no cost, but you must register and pay a licensing fee for the others.
